Actually, I’m 31, but this title had a much higher “wit factor “…giggiddy.
In this midst of this career transition I have been missing the beginning job search X-factor, better known as the Internship. Recently I’ve joined the ranks and am happy with the result. No excessive coffee runs or lunch orders. Just good ole fashioned work, in a great environment, with a lot of opportunity to learn and grow.
The funny, and obvious, thing is that I’m not in between my junior and senior year of college. This internship feels like a job to me and not a summer fling. I’d be happy to go in everyday for 8 hours a day, if it wasn’t for my landlord always reminding me that apartments don’t work on the barter system.
I’ve read that it’s becoming more common for career transitionees to partake in internships in their later years. I hope that wasn’t an onion article. I am appreciating this internship way more than I would have 10 years ago and I guess it helps that my young looking face blends in well with my fellow
interns. Exciting times are here.
Random Thought for Subway: I heard the monthly nyc subway pass is now over $100…HA! No Way.

I’m a 40-something graduate student and feel like this all
the time. I don’t have an internship but did get my current student
worker job at the college. It’s weird, all the other “kids” are
something like 20-24.

Thanks for the comment. Careers that form in the later years have their pros and cons. Best of luck with your current endeavors.

Jason,
I’m almost 33, and just started an internship at an accounting firm. I can’t say I look quite as young as you do, but people do mistake me for being in my mid 20s.
I love the internship, but I am very aware of people’s judgements. Luckily, this normally only comes from the other young interns. The older folks are more concerned with whether or not I can do the job. Not if I am a potential party-mate.
There is no way when I was 21 I would have appreciated this opportunity.

Hi J,
Thanks for the propers on my youthful face. I do agree with you about appreciating the opportunity at this age. My mindset now is very focused and centered on succeeding and not on Bud Bottles on Wednesday nights. (I still do enjoy a cold bud though)
I wish you the best of luck with your internship and am happy you found this post. Do you have a blog of your own?
Thanks!
Jason

I’m 26 turning 27 and at first I thought I was the only one who was looking for an internship that age. I’m really depressed because I had a chance to graduate at 21 with multiply internships and what did I do? I BLEW IT and I can never get that time back. The thing that bothers me is that I had a chance and I blew it; if only I could get back in time. I hate my life. From this day forward I will move forward until I reach my goals.
